10mm Auto

10mm Auto (other times referred to as 10x25mm, 10mm caliber, 10mm Automatic) was designed by a United States Marine Jeff Cooper in 1983. The FBI swiftly put this cartridge into service in 1989 following the 1986 Miami shootout. With the FBI backing 10mm Auto along with shows like Miami Vice adapting this cartridge it was almost an instant success. 10mm Auto is consider one of the best available semiautomatic pistol cartridges for law enforcement usage. Most agents have a complaint that there is excessive recoil associated with 10mm Auto, but most are willing to look passed this.

When taking a look at the performance side of 10mm Auto this is where it stands out when compared to similar pistol calibers. 10mm Auto is consider to be high-velocity, making it very flat-shooting relative to other handgun cartridges. One of the highly noted statistics 10mm Auto achieves is retaining more kinetic energy up to 100 yards than similar calibers have at the muzzle. 10mm Auto is marketed for tactical, defensive, and hunting scenarios. In the United States 10mm Auto is one of the very few semi-auto, rimless cartridges that is legal for hunting white-tailed deer in many states. Although most common agencies retired 10mm Auto the FBI Hostage Team, Special Weapons/Tactics Team, and various other agencies continue to use this cartridge to this day. The government of Denmark issues the 10mm Auto to the Sledge Patrol to defend themselves against polar bear attacks while patrolling.

10mm Auto was originally only loaded using a large pistol primer. It is starting to follow the trend of other pistol calibers and is now offered in small primer as well. 10mm Auto has a SAAMI pressure rating of 37,500 psi, that along with the larger case allows for the use of heavier bullets and more smokeless powder.
